There are so many delightful species of fish available for your home aquarium. The options for a fish tank are unlimited. My passion is largely with freshwater fish which makes the selection process somewhat easier in finding your favorites. All those awesome salt water fish are taken off the radar. Freshwater tropical fish have a lot to give. Anything that one might desire in a pet fish is available for your freshwater aquarium; large fish, fish with bright colors, community fish, aggressive fish and any other type of fish you may think about.

Its tricky when starting out to compile a bunch of cool fish the will live in harmony for a prolonged time. I encountered many difficulties early on. I had been around the aquarium keeper web sites and knew about fish compatibility, but I believed that I could get lucky I and come up with an exotic arrangements of extraordinary fish. The issue as I shortly discovered was that my tank was too small, having aggressive and even semi-aggressive fish packed together in a 60 gallon aquarium inevitably led to disaster.

My first couple attempts at getting in to the hobby of fish keeping ended in disaster. My initial try will ever be termed aqaugeddon. I accidentally added an overly toxic a mixture of algaecide, dechlorinator and ph balancer and soon thereafter all 20 of my fishy pals were no more. What a tragic way to learn that the chemicals I thought would benefit my fish could actually kill them. I now had a much better understanding of how to achieve clean, fish friendly water but had chosen a bunch of tiny fish that would quickly grow bigger than their accommodations could support. The realization came early that my little fish would at some point turn out to be greater fish, but fish size was the least of my worries. Equipped with fins and in some situations fangs fish can get mean, with one another, with your aquarium decorations and any part of you that you stick in the tank. Right around the three month mark my tank turned in to a battle zone. My fish began choosing their territories and the violence ensued. Scared fish, with ripped fins and missing scales became a daily occurrence. It became obvious that I would need to make some decisions. My fish collections could only be supported with a much bigger aquarium or more aquariums. The issue was I lived in an apartment and my wife wasn’t too excited about all of our floor space occupied by fish tanks.

I could have averted countless troubles, saved money and spared the lives of numerous innocent fish if someone would have taught me about the possible perils that were ahead. My determination in writing is to help people in setting up their ultimate aquarium from the word go. Owning aquariums is pleasant and rewarding, but a heads up and a little help it could end up being a very expensive hobby.
